DENVER -- Hot again today in early July!  Afternoon highs were in the upper 90s..not too far from record breaking heat. A few scattered thunderstorms quickly moved across the metro area for the afternoon. In the mountains, the weather has been dry and pleasant with widely scattered thunderstorms expected for the evening.  Our Colorado skies will remain hazy due to the many wildfires burning across Colorado.

Although most of the mountain storms will be scattered, there will some pockets of heavy rain in the high country on Sunday afternoon.  As a result, a FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in effect near the 416 Fire burn scar.  Similar concerns will exist for the Spring Fire and the others across the state.

Temperatures will stay hot for Denver and the plains with highs in the upper 90s.  In the mountains, temperatures will be in the 80s below 10,000 feet, but very comfortable in the 60s and 70s above 10,000 feet.

If you are planning to head to the high country, be aware that we are now in afternoon thunderstorm season.  Skies will be mostly sunny, but hazy in the morning, but clouds will be building and scattered thunderstorms developing by early afternoon.  Watch out for lightning and gusty winds.  If you are hiking, temperatures can quickly drop into the upper 40s when a storm rolls through - take rain gear and dress in layers!

The overall weather pattern is hitting the "summer doldrums" now with light winds aloft and little change from day to day.  The weather forecast will not change much into early next week - hot & dry for the plains, afternoon storms for the mountains.
