DENVER — Tuesday was a warm day for Denver and the eastern plains with highs in the upper 50s to mid-60s under a partly cloudy sky.
A cold front will bring a big change to Colorado with 3 to 6 inches of snow to the mountains, and very strong northwest winds for Denver and the eastern plains.
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for the Northern and Central Mountains through Noon on Wednesday. The new snow, combined with strong winds will create very hazardous travel conditions. Temperatures will be bitterly cold - just single digits and teens with Wind Chill readings of 15 to 30 degrees below zero.
Denver and the Northeast Plains will not see very much snow - just a few flurries or a brief burst of snow tonight and early Wednesday. The main concern will be the colder temperatures and the very strong winds. A High Wind Warning is in effect for the northeast quarter of Colorado until 6 PM Wednesday. Wind gusts of 20-40 mph are expected with some gusts to 60 mph possible northeast of Denver.
Expect difficult driving conditions over northeast Colorado late tonight and Wednesday due to the strong winds and possible blowing dust. High profile vehicles will be especially impacted. Temperatures will be much colder with highs only in the upper 20s to low 30s.
By Wednesday night, the skies will clear in the mountains and the winds will diminish across the state. Lows will drop to 5 above to 10 below in the mountains and into the teens for Denver and the plains.
Christmas Eve Day should be dry with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s. Skies will be clear overnight — great visibility for Santa Claus!
Christmas Day will be "merry and bright," but the only place that will be truly white will be in the mountains. Denver and the eastern plains will just have patches of leftover snow on the ground. Highs will be in the 50s.
Saturday will be dry and mild with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s for the Denver area.
Sunday will stay dry, but turn colder. Next week should become a more stormy time with a better chance for snow across Colorado heading into the start of the new year.
