LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Interstate 70 remains closed in both directions Friday morning after a fiery crash left more than two dozen charred vehicles on the road near Colorado Mills Parkway late Thursday afternoon.
Colorado Department of Transportation officials said Friday that the highway isn't likely to reopen until sometime Saturday, so commuters will need to find other routes through the area.
So, what's the best way to get around this closure? Here are some options:
If you’re going east
If you’re heading eastbound, you’ll want to consider a few different alternative routes.
First, you can take 6th Avenue to Kipling Street all the way to I-70. This should take 12 to 15 minutes with light traffic, depending on how you catch the traffic lights. See below:
Another alternative is to exit 6th Avenue and immediately exit at Indiana. Take a left to Colfax Avenue and then a right toward the tricky intersection at Youngfield, where you will make a left onto Youngfield and take it all the way up to 32nd Avenue to the eastbound I-70 ramp. This should take 10-12 minutes with light traffic. See below:
The third alternative will work for drivers headed east on I-70 or west on C-470. If you get in the eastbound lanes of I-70, take the exit labeled West 470 Boulder and stay left on the ramp. If you're on westbound C-470, stay on 470 to the dead end at Highway 6, then turn left on 6th Avenue in Golden to Highway 58. Take a right (east) onto Highway 58 around Coors to eastbound I-70. This should take about 10 minutes with light traffic. See below:
If you’re going west
If you’re heading west, you can take westbound I-70 until you reach the exit at Highway 58 to Golden. Turn left (south) onto 6th Avenue. Exit C-470, which will take you to eastbound 470 or westbound I-70. This should take about 12 to 15 minutes with traffic. See below:
