DENVER -- A Colorado non-profit is getting national attention for its work with those battling depression and other mental health illnesses.

Project Helping is one of 25 finalists for the Renewal Awards, sponsored by The Atlantic and AllState Insurance.

Project Helping focuses on the volunteer and improving the volunteer's mental wellness.

Its founder, Justin Kruger, says the $20,000 award could fund 28 volunteer events.

"Twenty-eight volunteer events with an average of 12 people at each one means we can help almost 350 people improve their mental wellness," Kruger said.

“That doesn’t account for the net effect of these volunteer programs, which impact thousands in our community,” Kruger said.

You can vote for Project Helping until next Friday, Feb. 17.

"I've never felt better mentally than after a volunteer event," said volunteer Annie Longley.

“It leads you to a happier place, really," said Derek Stewart, another volunteer with Project Helping.
