We know life in the office is tough when you’re trying to stay healthy. However, new survey shows a stressful work life may actually be prompting those few extra pounds.
"It's chicken simmered in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, with bay leaves,” said Kathy Poland, as she prepared some good eats for her food truck, A Taste Of The Philippines.
And when your job involves serving up food, it's hard not to keep testing the company product. But Poland says life in the kitchen is a lot healthier than her past life as an accountant.
"Punching numbers and stuff, fun times,” recalls Poland. “And you kind of get in this habit of eating and snacking, you know?"
A CareerBuilder survey of 3,000 American workers found 55 percent feel they're overweight. 44 percent say they've gained weight at their present jobs.
Among those who've gained weight, nearly half say they're too tired from work to work out. More than half blame their weight gain on sitting most of the day. And more than a third blamed stress related eating.
"Like everything in life, moderation, right? said Eric Kimble, staffing recruiter for The Creative Group Denver at Robert Half, "I think donuts twice a day, every day is not a healthy thing."
Kimble says little tweaks to your workday can help keep the pounds off, but long-term change needs an optimistic outlook on your 9 to 5.
"We work to live, we don't live to work.” said Kimble. "So keeping it in perspective, being proud and to love what you do. I think these are things that make work less like work."
