CHICAGO (AP) — The Colorado Rockies placed second baseman DJ LeMahieu on the 10-day disabled list Monday with a right hamstring strain and activated outfielder Carlos Gonzalez from the DL.

LeMahieu got hurt when he doubled in the third inning of Friday night's 1-0 victory at Miami.

"I don't see it being more than (three or four days)," he said before Colorado's series opener against the Chicago Cubs. "It is getting better, it's just not good enough to be a productive player."

The 29-year-old LeMahieu, a two-time All-Star, is batting .290 with five homers and 12 RBIs in 27 games.

Pat Valaika got the start at second Monday night at Wrigley Field, and Ian Desmond replaced LeMahieu in the leadoff spot. Manager Bud Black said he also might try rookie Ryan McMahon at second while LeMahieu is out.

"He doesn't have a great deal of experience there; we're talking minor league experience," Black said. "And it's not probably a position where he feels as comfortable as he does at third or at first. It's not an easy transition to make but if we feel as though we have to do it, we'll do it."

Gonzalez had been out since injuring his right hamstring while making a catch during a loss at Pittsburgh on April 18.

Colorado began Monday with a .224 team batting average. All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado and outfielders Gonzalez and Gerardo Parra have missed time in the early going because of suspensions or injuries.

"Offensively, it's been kind of frustrating. Parra was out, Carlos was out, now I'm out," LeMahieu said. "We haven't all been in the lineup at the same time. It's been frustrating.

"We'll get on a roll. It hasn't been there yet but at the same time we're right around .500. Not that we're happy with that but with the way we've hit, it could be worse."
