DENVER — Nearly 80% of Colorado high schools have opted to play football this fall, the Colorado High School Activities Association announced Tuesday as it released new district alignments for the shortened season.

A total of 218 schools, or 78.99% of all CHSAA programs, will play this fall in season "A," while 58 schools will play in season "C" in the spring.

The schools playing this fall include most large schools in the Denver metro area, including the Cherry Creek School District, Douglas County School District and Jeffco Public Schools. Denver Public Schools opted to stick to a spring football schedule and won't be playing this fall.

Even with football returning this fall, the season will look much different. Here's how CHSAA formatted the schedule:

• CHSAA will name a champion for each season, fall and spring.

• All teams will play a six-game regular season. For those that don't make the playoffs, they can schedule a seventh game against another team that doesn't make the playoffs.

• While some games could be postponed or cancelled due to COVID-19 precautions, teams must play at least four regular-season games to qualify for the postseason.

• The playoffs will be an eight-team bracket for each class and seeded by the CHSAA Seeding Index.
