DENVER – Broncos receiver Carlos Henderson will begin camp on the reserve exempt list as he deals with a personal issue, his agent told Denver7 Wednesday.

Henderson, who was drafted in the third round last year out of Louisiana Tech, missed all of last season with a thumb injury and ran into trouble in the offseason with a marijuana arrest in Louisiana.

Henderson had projected as a potential starting slot receiver with return skills on special teams, but neither of those materialized. He struggled in camp last year before tearing a ligament in his left thumb in August, which required surgery.

Head coach Vance Joseph challenged Henderson during this year’s OTAs, saying he needs to improve and must “make the team.”

The NFL explains the reserve exempt list as "a special player status available to clubs only in unusual circumstances."
