DENVER -- No matter the quarterback -- Trevor Siemian is the clear favorite -- the Broncos remain defined by their defense. Denver's first-string defense -- I like to call them them Orange Rush -- has surrendered 47 yards on 18 plays in two games.
And it could be better tonight with the preseason debut of cornerback Aqib Talib. The defense leads the Three Things to Watch For in Game 3:
Dominant D
It can't be overstated that the Broncos need their defense humming from jump. The Broncos have unresolved issues offensively. A dominant D creates a margin for error and allows for patience at the quarterback position, if needed. Talib's case remains open with the Dallas police department. Without resolution from the law, the NFL might choose to wait before deciding whether to punish the cornerback. Talib's presence is critical. He brings energy and a nastiness.
Who is in at RB?
We know all eyes will be on the quarterback. But the RB position brings intrigue. Ronnie Hillman is fighting for a roster spot. His ability to pass block on third down could keep him on the team. Kapri Bibbs is making a charge. But Hillman isn't done yet.
What happens with Sanchez?
Mark Sanchez played himself out of the top spot with two turnovers last week in the red zone. It's hard to see him unseating Siemian at this point. His roster spot is in jeopardy because of his salary and draft pick compensation. If Siemian plays well and his shoulder holds up, I'd get on the phone and see if Dallas is interested in Sanchez. Maybe they aren't. But worth a try.
