DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service has declared that a southwest Colorado wildfire has been officially extinguished, six months after it erupted north of Durango.

The Durango Herald reports the so-called 416 Fire consumed 84 square miles (218 square kilometers) and forced thousands of evacuations since it started June 1.

The Forest Service has not said what caused the fire, and it has been tight-lipped about its investigation

Officials have not given a timeframe for when that information might be released.

Jonina Vanderbilt, Forest Service spokeswoman in Durango, says the investigation has been completed, but an outside probe is being conducted to vet the results.
