GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. – The 113 Fire that shut down Interstate 70 and put two subdivisions outside Glenwood Springs on pre-evacuation notices Wednesday afternoon is 95 percent contained as of Thursday afternoon and is expected to be fully contained by day's end.
The fire has so far burned 4 ½ acres. Firefighters say they will continue operations for the next several days as the fire is monitored for hot spots.
Both lanes of westbound I-70 were expected to be open to traffic by 4 p.m. Travelers in the area are advised to slow down, use extra caution and not stop in the fire area to keep crews on the ground safe.
The fire is burning east of South Canyon in the Storm King Mountain area. The 1994 South Canyon Fire killed 14 firefighters in the same area.
Firefighters said residents should not be surprised to see smoke or fire flare-ups Thursday.
