DENVER — The Colorado state legislature passed a resolution Monday to rename part of C-470 to honor Kendrick Castillo, the STEM School student hailed as a hero for tackling one of the gunmen who attacked his school.

Following the unanimous vote, the portion of the state highway from Santa Fe to University Boulevard will be renamed Kendrick Castillo Memorial Highway.

Rep. Kevin Van Winkle, R-Highlands Ranch; Sen. Chris Holbert, R-Parker; and Rep. Patrick Neville, R-Castle Rock, were sponsors of the resolution.

Castillo's parents, John and Maria Castillo, were at the State Capitol Monday for the resolution's passing.

"We were honored to be joined by Kendrick's parents, John and Maria Castillo. Our hearts and prayers are forever with your family and with Kendrick," read a tweet from CO House Republicans.

The 18-year-old senior at STEM School Highlands Ranch was days away from graduating when he was fatally wounded in the May 7 shooting.

Castillo, along with classmates Brendan Bialy and Joshua Jones, pinned the suspected shooter against a wall, helping to minimize the bloodshed, authorities said.
