The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has found that Spanish-speaking janitors at the Auraria Campus in Denver have been discriminated against based on their national origin and limited English proficiency.
The Denver Post reports that the commission released its findings of an investigation May 11, saying at least 14 custodians were discriminated against by being forced to speak, sign documents and receive safety instructions only in English.
Employees and union officials say some employees have been injured on the job and were told to sign forms waiving their rights to workers' compensation or medical treatment.
The commission is calling on Auraria officials to address the issues and begin mediation efforts.
Auraria spokeswoman Katy Brown says in a statement the campus doesn't have an English-only policy and doesn't discriminate against employees.
