School Board Member's Gun Permit Permanently Revoked

Brett Reese Subject Of Permanent Restraining Order By Radio Competitor

A Greeley-Evans School Board member's concealed weapon permit was permanently revoked Friday, according to a published report.

Brett Reese was also ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from his business competitor's home, as a Weld County judge made a temporary restraining order permanent, the Greeley Tribune reported on its website.

The general manager of KFKA AM sought the restraining order after he said Reese, the owner of KELS FM, left a message on his answering machine threatening a "shootout" if KFKA sales staff called on businesses advertising on KELS.

Earlier, Reese told school board members he would carry his concealed weapon to board meetings after he said his life was threatened over his broadcast commentary about Martin Luther King Jr.

Reese called King a "sexual degenerate, an America-hating communist and a criminal traitor of even his own people."

Greeley School Board members called the comments "inflammatory and detrimental."

The board agreed on a resolution acknowledging Reese's right to free speech, but decried his message. That prompted Reese to walk out of the meeting earlier this month.

Reese had been repeating the commentary twice a day for some time.
