DENVER -- One in five Colorado residents is Latino and now organizations are working to make sure those voices are heard in political circles. That work starts at the grassroots level – focusing on things like school board races.
“Elections are local and if we’re going to make a difference and make sure people understand their voices are going to be heard,” Maria Handley of Generation Latino told Anne Trujillo on this weekend’s Politics Unplugged. “It’s important for us to make sure we are talking to them on issues that are relatable to them and their community.”
Handley says one of the biggest challenges is getting young people involved, whether they are Latino or not.
“Millennials across the board get turned off on negative campaigning and the polarization of issues,” she said. “We make it very clear, it’s very important to us to take the high road and really talk about the plausible aspects of engaging on important issues.”
