Pentagon: 4 Service Members Shot In Theater Shooting; 1 Missing

Aurora Mall Theater Is Near Buckley Air Force Base

Four military service members who work at Buckley Air Force Base were shot in the mass shooting inside an Aurora movie theater.

Pentagon officials said two airmen and a sailor were injured, and another sailor was missing.

The sailor who was still unaccounted for was known to have attended the showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” at the movie theater in Aurora, a Pentagon statement released Friday said.

There are reports that the sailor has been killed, but officials with Buckley Air Force Base could not confirm that.

None of the victims have been identified because the victims' families have still not been notified.

The Pentagon also confirmed the man arrested in connection with the shooting, James Holmes, is not a past or current member of any branch or component of the U.S. military.

The statement did not include names nor which installation the wounded and missing military members were assigned to.

Buckley Air Force Base is about 5 miles from the movie theater where the shooting occurred.

In response to the shooting at the Aurora Mall Movie Theater, Buckley activated an Emergency Family Assistance Control Center, a Traumatic Stress Response Events Team and several chaplains to assist family members affected by this tragedy, a Buckley release said.

"Our thoughts are with the families of the victims of this horrific tragedy. We have services available for all military that were involved and their families," Col. Daniel Dant, 460th Space Wing commander, said in the release.

The base community includes more than 3,000 active-duty service members from every service, as well as approximately 3,300 National Guard and Reserve personnel.

The 460th Space Wing at the base is focused on surveillance, tracking and missile warning through satellites. The Colorado Army National Guard and Headquarters Air Personnel Reserve Center are major tenants on the base.
