A skier died after losing control during a trip with his daughter at Telluride Ski Resort this week, according to a San Miguel County Sheriff's Office spokesperson.

William Scott Elligott, 49, of Colorado Springs, was skiing in the Gold Hill area with this 20-year-old daughter on Wednesday when he fell to his death, San Miguel County Sheriff's spokeswoman Susan Lilly said. The incident happened at approximately 11 a.m.

The daughter told Sheriff’s deputies that she was skiing ahead of her father on “Gold Hill 1,” but pulled over on a catwalk to wait for him. Moments later, she looked up and saw him pass her.

That's when Elligott apparently lost control and both of his skis were released as he tumbled out of her sight, according to Lilly. Deputies say the area is steep and wooded and it took some time for her to find him.

Several Telluride Ski Patrollers were sent to check on the man, but found no pulse once at the scene. CPR was performed on Elligott and an AED was applied, but Elligott could not be revived.

“This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts are with the family,” San Miguel Sheriff Bill Masters said.

The San Miguel Sheriff’s Office and the County Coroner are conducting an Investigation of the incident.
