A thief managed to shove a $35,000 coat under his winter jacket and walk away with it from a store in Vail on Valentine's Day.

A worker at Designer Furs in Vail told police a man and woman came into the store around 6 p.m. on Feb. 14.

"The male and female duo worked together to distract the sales associate and partially block surveillance cameras," Vail police said. "The male was able to steal the jacket by concealing it under his puffy-style winter coat."

investigators said the store clerk didn't know the jacket was gone until they reviewed the video surveillance.

It showed the man stole an Empress brand chinchilla fur jacket that was natural gray in color, police said.

Investigators are now trying to determine is the Vail thieves were involved in similar thefts in Aspen and Denver.

"There are indications these thieves are professional shoplifters,” said Detective Sgt. Annette Dopplick.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Vail Police Department at 970-479-2201.
