A woman died in an apartment fire in Aurora early Friday morning but a dog managed to escape the flames by jumping from a third-floor balcony, according to officials with the Aurora Fire Department.

The Aurora Fire Department first reported the fire at the Ponderosa Villas about 2:15 a.m. on Twitter.

The apartment complex is located at 1519 South Galena Way. That's just southwest of South Havana Street and East Florida Avenue.

The fire broke out in a unit on the third floor. The woman inside was taken to the hospital but died later from her injuries.

There was a dog on the balcony, but it squeezed through the railings and jumped to the ground, officials with Aurora Fire said. Somebody found the dog and took him to a 24-hour emergency room for pets.

Most residents of the apartment complex were allowed back into the building by about 5:30 a.m., except the residents in two units directly below the apartment that caught fire. Those units were damaged by water used to fight the fire. The Red Cross tweeted that it was helping four adults and a child displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
