Well known mountain biker found shot to death near Colorado road

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. – A Colorado man well-known in the mountain biking community was found shot to death near a road west of Monument Sunday.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a homicide investigation after the body of Timothy Watkins was found near the base of Mt. Herman Road Sunday morning.

Watkins was reported missing Thursday. The 61-year-old was last seen around 10 a.m. near his home in Palmer Lake. 

An extensive search of the area turned up his bike and a shoe, but deputies were unable to locate the missing mountain biker. A resident found the Watkins’ body Sunday morning.

The area where Watkins’ body was found is popular with bicycle enthusiasts.

Investigators do not have suspect information at this time. The community has been asked to remain vigilant.
