Uber passenger killed in Denver hit & run crash ID'd

DENVER – The 37-year-old Uber passenger killed in a hit-and-run crash in Denver over the weekend was identified Thursday.

Maroun Khater was in an Uber early Sunday morning when another vehicle, driven by 20-year-old Adrian Valdez, crashed into the Uber vehicle near 14th Avenue and Franklin Street.

The early morning crash killed Khater and injured the Uber driver. Police say Valdez took off on foot after the crash but was arrested a short time later. 

The suspect appeared in court Mondayon charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. Police say he exhibited signs of impairment when he was located.

Khater was from Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. He was born in Lebanon and came to the United States in 1985, according to his obituary. A funeral will be held Saturday in New Jersey.

Uber released the following statement following Sunday’s crash:

"We are devastated to hear of this horrible tragedy and extend our deepest thoughts to all those grieving the loss of their loved one."
