Two die in accidents on the Gunnison River

GUNNISON, Colo. – Two people died in accidents on the Gunnison River on Friday, officials said.

The Gunnison County Sheriff's Office responded about 11:15 a.m. to a rescue of a woman who was trying to paddle board down the river, near County Road 32, southwest of Gunnison, according to the Gunnison Regional 911 Center. The victim, 31, had lost control of her board and then got hung up on a tree. Rescue crews recovered the woman, and she was flown to a hospital in Grand Junction, where she died.

Later Friday, the sheriff's office learned that National Park Service authorities had found the victim of an apparent kayaking accident near Colorado 149 and Colorado 50, also southwest of Gunnison. The victim, a 65-year-old woman, died at the scene.

The names of both victims have not been released.
