BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- The victim of a vehicle theft in broad daylight said he's not so worried about the stolen truck, but what was inside -- his 4-month-old puppy.

Richard Ivy, a local carpenter, said he took his mother out for a meal near the Flatirons Crossing, a mall in Broomfield, on Sunday at about 2 p.m.

While he did leave his puppy in the vehicle, Ivy said he had been walking out every 20 minutes to check on the purebred chocolate lab.

During one such check-in, Ivy said he couldn't locate his truck, a distinct, white Ford F-350. Ivy immediately called police, who have been working leads in the case.

"I wasn't near any other cars, and they must have just came up and got into it and off they went," Ivy said.

Ivy said he had locked his truck, but doesn't believe that stopped whomever stole the vehicle. Although his tools and more were inside, he said he is focused on locating Tater, the lab.

Police say they're not just focusing on finding the truck, but the lab as well.

According to Broomfield police, when vehicles are stolen with animals inside, they frequently locate the animals posted on Craigslist.

Detectives will be searching Craigslist and other websites for postings for a 4-month-old chocolate lab, noting if they locate the lab, it will help them locate the truck.

Unfortunately for the investigation, police say the Benihana did not have any cameras on the parking lot.

Ivy provided police photos of his truck to police and the public in the hopes of helping the investigation along.

Anybody with a lead is encouraged to call police at 720-887-5282.
