DENVER — Police in Denver are looking for thieves who targeted a church.
Surveillance video released last week shows two women removing a file cabinet from St. Francis of Assisi National Catholic Church off Leetsdale Drive in Denver.
Police said the theft happened Sunday, Oct. 20, around 1:45 p.m.
Church leaders said they were taken by surprise.
Alfonso Castillo has been a priest in the Polish Catholic Church for the last three years. He said their doors are always open to everyone, and it is something the two women took advantage of.
"There are two ladies who came to ask for information, general information about the community, and we gave them that information," said Castillo. "My wife was the person who gave them the information."
Castillo said it all happened within a matter of minutes, and the church cameras captured everything.
"The way they did it and even in the time when they did it -- it was impressive," he said.
The video shows the women using a stroller to remove the file cabinet, which Castillo said contained church records but no cash or checks.
Most importantly, he said, the file cabinet was where the church stored a book of sacraments containing information like baptisms, communions and confirmations.
Castillo said the women went inside a room that was supposed to be locked and ran off.
"They took something that is so scared and so valuable for us," he said.
Castillo is praying the women who stole the file cabinet will have the heart to return it.
"We still are praying for them, but we would like to have the possibility of that book, especially the book," said Castillo.
The church notified Denver police of the incident, and anyone with information is urged to contact them.
