AURORA, Colo. — Police in Aurora are looking for a man who shot and killed a teenager in Aurora Monday evening.
The shooting occurred around 6 p.m. in the 4700 block of South Memphis Street off East Smoky Hill Road in the southeast part of the city.
The male victim, whose name and age have not been released, was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz would not comment on the motivating factors behind the shooting but said during a press briefing that the shooting was not random. He thanked the neighbors who rushed to help the dying teen until paramedics arrived.
The shooter is described as a skinny white male in his 20s. He was wearing a black hoodie and black jeans. Police are asking area residents to shelter in place as they attempt to locate the suspect.
Monday's incident is the latest in a string of shootings involving juveniles in Aurora over the last couple of months. Chief Metz said the recent surge of violence among young people illustrates a bigger societal problem that police can't solve alone.
"This is a societal problem, and we are now coming into summertime when it is heating up quick," Metz said. "And we are seeing violence all around our city; we're seeing violence all around our region."
