STERLING, Colo. — A Sterling police officer fatally shot a suspect after a car chase on Sunday evening, officials said Tuesday.

The incident happened shortly after 6 p.m. after the chase ended in crash on Highway 6 west of Hillrose, according to a police news release. When officers from Sterling and the Logan County Sheriff's Office went to stop the driver, Tyler Wayne Kracht, 28, shots were fired by a Sterling officer, police said. More information about what led to the shots was not released.

Kracht, who lived in Fort Collins but had ties to Sterling, died at the scene. No passengers were in his car and no officers were injured.

Kracht was wanted in a shooting that happened last week in Sterling. He was accused of shooting at a vehicle, but no one was injured. When a Sterling police officer tried to stop him on Sunday about 5:45 p.m., he fled, traveling on Highway 6 and then in the wrong direction on Interstate 76 before returning to Highway 6.

The Morgan County Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
