DENVER – While the stadium formerly known as Sports Authority Field at Mile High still does not have a new name, once it gets one, the money from the naming rights will go to millions of dollars in upgrades.

Mile High Stadium is 15 years old – not very senior, but older than 11 other NFL stadiums. Atlanta opens the 12th stadium next year, which will come with 62,000 square feet of video monitors.

“Sports Authority Field is now 20th in the league in terms of total area video display in the bowl, but you are 12th in the league with the single-largest screen,” said Mile High Stadium Senior Architect Lanson Nichols.

He updated the Mile High Board Tuesday on what needs to be fixed, as part of a 'State of the Stadium' 15-year assessment.

“Some people have called this the arms race of the NFL,” he said. “You look at it and every year, somebody is just bigger, bigger, bigger.”

The stadium got a once-over – from concrete, to welded connections and the 76,000 seats that will need replacing.

“The projection that we’ve got right now is over three seasons, starting in about four years, is about $16 million.”

Tuesday was just an overview for the board, which will decide what to fix first at a later time.

Among other things discussed as possibilities are new field-level suites, standing-room-only options like those at Coors Field, and any ideas to avoid asking the public for a new stadium altogether, which have cost more than $1 billion in other cities.
