DENVER – Sometimes the easiest way to brighten up your home is to simply look at what’s below your feet.

Denver7’s Theresa Marchetta and 5280 Home editor Hilary Masell Oswald recently paid a visit to Shaver-Ramsey Fine & Custom Rugs. The design mainstay first opened its doors back in 1976 and is now located on Fillmore St off 6th Avenue in Cherry Creek.

Co-owner Paul Ramsey told them they shouldn’t worry about stains or dirt, even on the finest rugs, saying that handwoven wool preserves the lanolin so it resists staining.

The hardest part is picking out a design that will work well in your home. Oswald says most quality rug shops can help with that by allowing to take home a few different rugs to see which works best in the area you want it.

“Most rug shops will allow you to try out a rug,” she said. “In your home with your paint colors and furnishings, a rug that looks great in the shop might not look great in your home and a rug that you’re not sure about in the shop might be the perfect rug for your home.”

The handmade rugs sold at Shaver-Ramsey come from around the world and can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. If you know exactly the colors and design you want, they can also find someone to custom weave a rug for you.
