DENVER — A Routt County mom who was killed in a horrific two-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 near Genesee Christmas Eve is being remembered as a teacher who made learning fun.
Sancy Shaw, 38, loved the adventure of everything around her, said her brother, Luke Florquist.
"I think she remembered what it was like to be a kid," he said. "So, she let kids be kids."
Shaw taught science at North Routt Community Charter School near Steamboat Springs.
The mother of four was driving west on I-70 on Christmas Eve with her 6-year-old daughter Charlee when an eastbound pickup, driven by 62-year-old Cheri Goodard, veered into the westbound lanes and struck Shaw's SUV.
Both Goodard and Shaw were killed.
The Colorado State Patrol said Goodard might have been driving under the influenceof both alcohol and marijuana.
When asked about that claim, Florquist said, "I don't think that's something that we want to address right now. We're focused on our family and we're focused on Charlee."
He said Charlee suffered serious injuries and is still being treated at Children's Hospital Colorado.
"She was hurt pretty badly," he said. "But she's a fighter, and we've seen some miraculous (progress) in the last couple of days."
Forquist also said that Charlee is under "incredible care."
Ryan Forquist, Shaw's other brother, said she had an incredible way of working with people and becoming a part of their lives.
"She was one of those people you never forget," he said.
Both of her brothers said the family's loss is indescribable.
They said the entire family, including Sancy's husband, Brett, and their three sons, have strong faith.
"I want people to know that, ultimately, Sancy lived her life for Jesus Christ," Ryan said. "She shared that with others and loved her family."
The Shaw family belongs to Anchor Way Church in Steamboat Springs.
Pastor Andrew Werley held a prayer meeting there Wednesday morning.
"There were about 150 people there," he said. "And we hugged and cried and read through Psalm 23 together and then we spent the majority of time praying for the Shaws and for Charlee."
An account has been set up at Yampa Valley Bank to help the family with expenses, including Charlee's medical costs.
The family has created a GoFundMe account.
