One dead after shooting that triggered shelter-in-place warning near the Highlands

DENVER — Residents were warned to shelter-in-place as police searched for a fatal shooting suspect near the Highlands neighborhood Thursday morning.

The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. in a building at W. 27th Avenue and Clay Avenue. The suspect fled and police said they believe she was in an area near Speer Boulevard and Alcott Street.

Police sent out calls to residents in the area warning them to shelter-in-place as officers searched for the suspect. The woman was found and taken into custody shortly before 5 a.m. and residents were given an all clear.

At 10 a.m., the Denver Police Department announced that the woman who was shot died.

The incident is being investigated as a domestic violence-related homicide.
