DENVER (AP) — Colorado auditors have released a report saying no one is checking if school safety programs in the state are making students safer.
The Denver Post reported Wednesday that auditors examined 12 programs across four departments tasked with promoting school safety and found a decentralized structure.
Auditors say the lack of consolidation caused duplicated efforts, gaps in services and challenges in determining reach and impact.
The Colorado School Safety Resource Center tasked with examining if programs were effective says it has evaluated various programs, but doesn't have the resources to look at an overall approach.
Officials say the state spent about $19 million in 2018 on school safety efforts and more than $55 million in 2019.
Auditors say 93% of school districts used at least one state school safety program.
