EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. — Recovery efforts restarted Monday after hikers reported that they had spotted what they believed was a woman's body near the summit of Pikes Peak.

At 12:20 p.m. Sunday, hikers reported they had seen what they thought was a woman's body while at the Golden Stairs section of Barr Trail, which leads to the top of Pikes Peak.

Jacqueline Kirby, spokesperson with the El Paso Sheriff’s Office, said it wasn’t clear if the body was on or off the trail. As of Monday afternoon, the death did not appear suspicious, she said.

That part of the trail is “quite treacherous,” Kirby said. Authorities tried to get a helicopter to the area Sunday, but were unable to find a place to land, she said. They restarted recovery efforts at first light Monday.

Kirby said to her knowledge, nobody has come forward inquiring about a missing person or overdue hiker. As of 1:30 p.m., she said she didn’t believe a body had been recovered.
