DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. – One person was killed, another was wounded and a third was arrested after a pursuit and deputy-involved shooting early Tuesday morning near Dry Creek Road and Interstate 25.
Around 3 a.m., deputies tried to stop a stolen vehicle near C-470 and Broadway but were shot at by the people inside, Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said. After being authorized to pursue and arrest the suspects, deputies used a PIT maneuver and rammed the stolen vehicle to get it to stop.
Afterward, Spurlock said, five deputies were involved in a shooting with the people inside.
One suspect was killed in the shooting, while another was shot and taken to a nearby hospital. A third suspect, identified Tuesday afternoon as 20-year-old Peirce Langewisch, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failing to register as a sex offender, Spurlock said at an afternoon news conference.
Spurlock said no deputies were shot in the incident but two were treated after crashing into the suspects’ vehicle. He showed some body camera video of the crash but did not show more video beyond that.
Both Spurlock and 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler, whose office will investigate the shooting, said the investigation will be extensive because they believe the suspects could have been involved in other crimes.
The two people who were shot have not been identified. Spurlock and Brauchler said the surviving suspects will likely face more charges.
