AURORA, Colo. – A 71-year-old woman jogging through a crosswalk was hit and killed by a driver Thursday morning, police said.

The crash happened just after 9 a.m. at the intersection of East Abilene Street and East Yale Avenue as the driver turned left onto westbound Yale, Aurora police said.

The 71-year-old woman was in the crosswalk with the right-of-way when she was hit and killed. Police said the driver stayed at the scene and that inebriation is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Aurora police said the woman’s death was the 21st involving a traffic crash so far this year and the eighth involving vehicles and pedestrians – though in seven of those cases, the pedestrian was crossing the road illegally.

“Drivers should stop, check and proceed slowly into crosswalks, and yield to pedestrians in the roadway. Pedestrians should use crosswalks and crosswalk buttons, obey pedestrian signals, and dress in a manner that illuminates you at night,” APD spokesperson Crystal McCoy said in a statement.

Police said the investigation is still ongoing. They are asking anyone who saw the crash, has dash camera video or other information to call the APD Traffic Unit or Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP.
