THORNTON, Colo. — A man is in custody after police say he shot a gun several times near a Thornton officer who returned fire but didn’t strike the suspect.

The incident occurred early Saturday morning as Thornton officers were arriving on a noise complaint call stemming from a large gathering at an apartment unit at Avana Eastlake Apartments, 2801 East 120th Ave.

Police said the suspect, whose name was not released, fired off several rounds as people were leaving the party after officers arrived. After a short foot pursuit the suspect was apprehended and a handgun was recovered from the scene.

The investigation is being conducted by the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Investigation team, which investigates all officer-involved shootings in Adams County.

The officer involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave, per protocol.
