LONGMONT, Colo. — A man who told police officers he was armed, suicidal and on drugs was found dead inside a Longmont apartment after a standoff and officer-involved shooting, police said Monday.

Longmont police initially responded to the Glen Ridge Apartments, 2211 Pratt St., Monday morning after receiving a call from a man who said he was using meth and heroin and had tried to shoot himself with a six-shot revolver, according to police.

When officers arrived, they located the man, later identified as Jesus Ramos, 34, in the passenger seat of a vehicle just south of the apartment complex, using a cell phone to talk to dispatchers. Ramos then told officers and dispatchers that he was armed and meant to kill the officers and/or civilians, police said.

Ramos eventually left the vehicle and ran toward the apartment complex with his hand wrapped in a jacket, according to police, at which point an officer fired a shot from his rifle. It’s unclear if the shot hit Ramos.

Police said Ramos then broke into a ground-floor apartment through a living room window. Two residents inside the apartment left when they confronted him.

A SWAT robot entered the apartment and found Ramos inside at about 6:48 a.m., police said. Paramedics pronounced Ramos dead at the scene. Ramos’ cause of death has not yet been determined, according to police.

Police said Ramos had a lengthy criminal history and was a registered sex offender.

The officer who fired a rifle at Ramos, who has not been publicly identified, has been placed on routine paid administrative leave while the shooting is under investigation. The Boulder County Critical Incident Investigations Team, made up of detectives from various Boulder County law enforcement agencies, will lead the investigation.
