DENVER – Police on Monday identified the man arrested Sunday in connection with a deadly shooting in southwest Denver.
Alberto Calcurian, 41, was taken into custody for investigation on one count of first-degree murder, according to Denver police and a redacted affidavit for his arrest obtained on Monday.
According to the affidavit, Calcurian called 911 on Sunday and stayed on the phone with dispatch until police arrived at his home in the 100 block of Xavier Street.
Exactly what he told dispatchers is redacted in the affidavit, but it was enough for the dispatcher to ask him if he was having mental health issues, to which he said he was not.
They found a handgun on the floor of his home and found a 59-year-old man suffering from several gunshot wounds on the same block. The man, who was identified Wednesday as 59-year-old Mark Berman, was pronounced dead about 45 minutes later at Denver Health Medical Center.
The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner said Berman's cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and his manner of death was homicide.
The affidavit says that investigators were able to determine the man had been shot outside of his parked truck.
Several witnesses described hearing gunshots in the area, but none said they saw the shooting. One of the witnesses said they saw a man who matched Calcurian’s description moving his car away from the home in which the shooting happened after hearing the shots fired.
The witness said that Calcurian and the car were taken into custody at the same location to which he moved his car.
When Calcurian was interviewed by police, he spoke with them until they started asking about the shooting, at which time he stopped the interview and was taken to Denver jail, according to the affidavit.
