Police had been searching all morning for two armed and dangerous suspects -- a man and a woman -- linked to four separate attempted car thefts from Friday morning.
Denver police said the suspects were successful in stealing a car Thursday and used that vehicle, a silver Nissan Murano, to try to steal more cars on Friday. The Nissan has Colorado plates 940-JFQ -- the same vehicle that crashed during the police pursuit.
Police received reports of the attempted car thefts between 5:45 a.m. and 6:20 a.m. Friday.
The first happened at East Mexico Avenue and South Steele Street, the next at East Exposition Avenue and South Columbine Street, the third was reported near South Alameda Avenue and South Lipan Street and the final attempt was at a home on south Utica Street near West Alameda Avenue.
Police said at the final address, a man left his car running unattended and then a man and woman tried to steal it. An officer on scene said when the car owner confronted the suspects, one of them fired gunshots, hitting the car.
The suspects took off after firing shots, but no one was hurt.
Another victim was in his vehicle, with his daughter in the passenger seat, when the suspects fired shots at him, according to the victim's father.
The father told Denver7 the suspects had cut off his son while he was driving and demanded he hand over the car. The victim's father, who wanted to be identified by only his first name, George, said his 9-year-old granddaughter was sleeping in the passenger seat at the time.
George said his son refused to give up the car, prompting one of the suspects to fire shots at him, with bullets hitting the car.
According to a police report, the Nissan Murano the two suspects were driving Friday was taken Thursday evening from a home on the 4900 block of West 5th Avenue. The report said the a door was left unlocked allowing the car to be stolen from the garage, and that the car keys were left inside the vehicle.
