EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. – The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office on Friday identified the pilot who died in a place crash south of the Meadow Lake Airport on Wednesday.

The pilot was identified as 46-year-old John O’Dell. The Federal Aviation Administration continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“We would like to express our deepest sympathies to Mr. O'Dell's family and friends,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

The crash happened just after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 600 block of McCandlish Road – southeast of Falcon and about 2 miles south of the airport.

A witness told dispatch that the plane appeared to be trying to land when it flipped over and crashed. Sheriff’s deputies and the Falcon Fire Department responded and found the pilot, later identified as O’Dell, dead inside. He was the only occupant of the plane at the time.

The sheriff’s office said the plane caught fire and was extinguished by Falcon firefighters.
