OURAY, Colo. — If the Ouray Ice Park is like a playground for ice climbers, then the upcoming Ouray Ice Festival is like a multi-day recess.

The annual festival, which is in its 24th year, begins Thursday and runs until Sunday at the ice park, which is on the southern edge of the city.

The event is the main fundraiser for the ice park.

Novice and professional ice climbers from around the world — ranging from people who have never tried but are interested to expert competitors — will attend this event, which celebrates the growing sport.

Attendees can demo the latest tools, gear and apparel from retailers during the day. They will also have the chance to participate in more than 100 interactive and educational climbing clinics for every skill level.

There are two competitions planned for guests to watch. The Elite Mixed Climbing Competition on Saturday, which starts at 9 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m., will feature the best of the best as they take on tough climbs.

The second one, the Hari Berger Speed Climbing Competition, is hosted by LOWA Boots and is scheduled for 9 a.m. Sunday.

During the evening hours, guests are welcome to enjoy music, presentations, food, dance parties and an auction.

Registration is not required to enter the park, watch competitions or visit the vendors. The ice park located at 280 Co Road 361.
