ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, Colo. — A scenic unpaved road in Rocky Mountain National Park that typically opens by the Fourth of July won’t open until mid-July.
Old Fall River Road is expected to open July 13. Some places at high elevation in the park are still experiencing winter conditions.
The road is closed to all uses, including drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists, Tuesday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is open on Saturday, Sunday and Monday to bicyclists and pedestrians.
The one-way 9.5-mile unpaved road starts at Endovalley Picnic Area and takes drivers above treeline at Fall River Pass along the steep slope of Mount Chapin’s south face.
The road will close for the season on Oct. 7, 2019.
Construction of the winding, narrow road began in 1913 and ended in 1920.
