STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – A Steamboat Springs police officer and his wife will not face charges after their 3-year-old son shot and killed himself in July.

Gavin Michael Stiles died July 14 at Yampa Valley Medical Center after he shot himself at the family’s home southeast of Stagecoach State Park.

His parents, Officer Michael Stiles and his wife, Joni, will face no charges in their son’s death, a 14th Judicial District grand jury determined Thursday.

“The Grand Jury concluded that it was not appropriate to charge Michael and Joni Stiles based on criminal negligence,” said 14th Judicial District Attorney Brett Barkey.

There had been speculation the gun used in the shooting was a department-issued weapon, though that is still unclear. Michael Stiles has been on administrative leave from the police department after the incident.
