DENVER -- Scam phone calls are nothing new, but the call a Denver resident got Sunday afternoon took some additional effort he wasn't prepared for.
“This was a live call from a local Denver area code number and the guy knew my name and the color of my car," said Drew Ferren. "So clearly, they’re doing the research. He had his information in order, so that was a little alarming."
Ferren said the person on the other end was, "very aggressive. Wanted my insurance information, kept saying he wanted money and he kept saying, like, 'You sound like you have a lot of money."
The would-be victim tried to ask questions of the caller, but only got one answer.
"He just said, 'I want money. I want your insurance info," Ferren said.
Because he didn't budge, the caller eventually hung up. Ferren wants others to know this scam is out there and no one should fall for it.
“I’m sure one out of 1,000 or 1 out of 100 people are going to say, 'I’ll do whatever you want. Here's my Social Security number, my credit card, just leave me alone kind of thing,” he said.
Which is why phone scams still happen. Ferren alerted police and added the number to the Do Not Call list.
“It sounds like scam calls are progressing in maybe getting a little more sophisticated, so it’s never getting harder and harder to tell what's legitimate and what’s not," Ferren said.
So if you're unsure, just hang up.
We reached out to police to try to find out how often they're hearing about this type of scam. They said they were looking into it, but we've yet to hear back.
