ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. – Nearly 10 years after an Adams County deputy was shot in the line of duty, a suspect is in custody.

Gerardo Reyes-Torres, 30, was arrested in Lakewood on Thursday night, according to a news release from the Adams County Sheriff's Office.

Reyes-Torres was the suspected gunman who shot Sgt. Luis Hernandez during a robbery investigation at a home in the 7900 block of Mona Court on Jan. 4, 2010. Hernandez was struck in both legs by shotgun pellets and later recovered.

Reyes-Torres evaded authorities after the shooting and likely the left the country, officials said. But detectives on Thursday received a tip from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office that an employer had applied for clearance for Reyes-Torres to work on a construction project at a county government building, the news release said.

Investigators began a manhunt for Reyes-Torres and found him in Lakewood, where they pulled him over at West Evans Avenue and South Federal Boulevard.

Reyes-Torres faces charges of attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, kidnapping, burglary, aggravated robbery and first-degree assault. He was being held at the Adams County Detention Facility with his bond set at $500,000.

He's had a warrant open for his arrest since the 2010 shooting.
