DENVER – A Denver neighborhood association that had sought to change its name and distance itself from its namesake will keep its name, despite a majority of votes being in favor of the change.
At a May 15 community meeting, members of Stapleton United Neighbors cast their votes, with 58 percent coming out in favor of changing the name and 42 percent opposed.
The “yes” votes came in below the threshold required to amend the organization’s bylaws, which is 66 percent, so the organization will keep its name.
The Stapleton neighborhood (and the former airport it’s named after) gets its name from former mayor Ben Stapleton, who had ties to the Ku Klux Klan.
The group had sought to change its name to Central Park United Neighbors after Central Park Boulevard, which runs north and south through the neighborhood.
