A memorial service for the sheriff's deputy shot and killed while trying to evict a man from his home near Bailey will be held March 14 in suburban Denver.

Cpl. Nate Carrigan, 35, will be honored at Faith Bible Chapel in Arvada during a service starting at 11 a.m.

Carrigan and two other deputies were serving an eviction notice when the homeowner opened fire, killing Carrigan, officials said. The two other deputies were able to return fire and killed the suspect .

Carrigan was well known in the community. There he was known as Coach Carrigan. He coached football and baseball at Platte Canyon High School.

Carrigan went to Platte Canyon High School himself. He earned 12 athletic letters in football, baseball and wrestling, his dad, John Carrigan, told Denver7.

Nate was varsity all four years in all three sports, John Carrigan, said.

Sheriff Fred Wegener said Nate Carrigan worked tirelessly and "meant a lot to our community."

"Nate was a caring individual who went above and beyond," Wegener said.

During his training to be a deputy, Carrigan drove school buses for the district, then later became a school resource officer while with the Park County Sheriff’s Office.

You don’t have to look far to find someone who knew Carrigan and all of them have something kind to say about the man they describe as a humble man, who wore a huge smile," said Wyatt Thomas, who played both football and baseball for Carrigan

Carrigan leaves behind a fiance, four step-children and several family members in Park County.

Carrigan's family is also in law enforcement. His grandfather served as president of the Fraternal Order of Police   Federal Lodge No. 13. Nate has two brothers who are also in law enforcement.

Instead of flowers, the family is asking for donations to a scholarship fund at the Bank of the West set up in Nate Carrigan's name.
