LYONS, Colo. — A man is facing an attempted first-degree murder charge after he allegedly drove his car onto a sidewalk and accelerated to hit a pedestrian.
Around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, deputies with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office responded to a car crash involving a pedestrian along the 100 block of Main Street in Lyons.
During the investigation, deputies learned that Charles William Armstrong, 65, was living in his car in the area and had been involved in some sort of altercation with another man, 55, earlier that day. During that dispute, the 55-year-old threw a rock at the back window of Armstrong’s car after Armstrong had “lunged his car” at the man several times, according to the sheriff's office.
The men then separated and the 55-year-old started to walk back to his friends at Redstone Liquors.
As he walked across Main Street, Armstrong allegedly drove around Park Street and up onto the sidewalk east of the liquor store. Witnesses said he drove on the sidewalk and accelerated toward the other man, intentionally serving to hit him with his car, the sheriff's office said. The force of the impact threw the other man into the street.
He was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Armstrong was arrested and booked into the Boulder County Jail on charges of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault, menacing and reckless endangerment.
Authorities determined that the the two men have a history of animosity toward one another and Armstrong had said earlier that day that he intended to run over the other man with his car.
