Man accused of killing Denver woman in hit-and-run on West Colfax is arrested

DENVER – Police have made an arrest in the fatal hit-and-run of a woman on W. Colfax Avenue in Denver on Tuesday night.

Juan Sanchez, 39, was arrested by Black Hawk police in Gilpin County on charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident involving death, according to a probable cause affidavit. He also faces a charge of driving under the influence in Gilpin County from earlier this month.

Annette Conquering Bear, 51, was steps away from walking into her apartment tower near Colfax and Zenobia when a driver of a white GMC pickup truck hit and killed her, her family said.

The truck took off in an unknown direction and was found later Tuesday night at Colfax and King Street. Police located the owner of the truck, who said they had loaned the truck to Sanchez.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Sanchez is in the U.S. illegally. He appeared in a Denver courtroom on Thursday afternoon and saw his bond set at $500,000.
