LAKEWOOD, Colo. — A man was taken to the hospital Thursday morning after he ran back into a burning building to rescue his dog.

Around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, West Metro Fire responded to a report of a structure fire at 220 S. Wright Street in Lakewood, said Doug Hutchinson with the fire department. When crews arrived, they found three units engulfed in flames on the first, second and third floor of an apartment building.

West Metro said one person in the second-floor apartment was burned when he ran back into the building to get his dog. The man was transported to a hospital in unknown condition. His dog is safe.

In total, the fire damaged five apartments, causing about $400,000 in damage, West Metro Fire said. Nine people were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
