WELD COUNTY, Colo. — An inmate who was in the custody of the Weld County Sheriff's Office early Sunday morning died, leading police to investigate the death.

Authorities say Marie Elizabeth Shuler, 27, died just before 6 a.m. on Sunday after deputies found her unresponsive in her cell. Police say they used life-saving techniques as soon as they located the unconscious woman, as well as calling for emergency medical help.

"This is a very unfortunate event, as well as an active, ongoing investigation," Steve Reams, Weld County Sheriff, said in a statement.

The Weld County Coroner said they're waiting to determine the manner and cause of Shuler's death until a formal autopsy report and laboratory study are completed.

A GoFundMe page for Shuler, who is a mother of two, has been set up here.
